What is a Doula?

DONA International defines a birth doula as “a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.”

A doula can provide support during any stage of the childbirth experience, including prenatal consultations, labor and birth, and postpartum follow-up care. A "birth doula" specifically focuses on providing support during labor and delivery. A birth doula is trained to help a woman and her partner prepare for the birth experience, provide comfort measures during labor (such as massage, breathing techniques, and positioning suggestions), and advocate for the mother's wishes and needs during the birth process.

While a doula can provide support during any stage of the childbirth journey, a birth doula focuses on providing support during labor and delivery. It's important to note that the term "doula" can also refer to a postpartum doula who supports the mother and family after the baby's birth.
